A Burning Itch

No, not that kind. But it's probably just as irritating. 

We've been trying to burn, needing to burn, for several weeks now, and the weather just hasn't cooperated. It's been too windy, or too wet, or too hot...

So we've burned out a few fire breaks at Griffith Prairie (see above photo) and Saturday we successfully burned 25 acres at Bader Park.  But it's just not enough.  Everything is starting to green up and we've got so much left to do.

In some cases, we need the fire to prepare the prairie for seed harvest next fall. In others, it's a matter of good land management.  But no matter what the reason, the prescribed burn season is very short and we can feel the window closing.

Hopefully this coming week will bring ideal conditions.  If so, we'll soon update the scrapbook and share some beautiful, fiery photos. So stay tuned.
