Let’s go for a volkswalk!

Posted by Jan Whitney on March 7, 2007 - 17:26 PM

A what?  No, it’s not something you do when your old VW breaks down.

A volkswalk is an organized, social, noncompetitive 10K (6.2 miles) or 5K walk for all ages.  We’re hosting one at Griffith Prairie on Saturday, April 28.

Volkswalking originated in Germany (surprise!) and evolved from a Sunday social tradition.  After church, families from neighboring villages would walk to the midpoint between the villages for a picnic, games and socializing.  The villages were approximately 10 kilometers apart, which is what set the length of most volkswalks.

The practice was imported to the U.S. in 1976 as part of the Bicentennial celebration.  The national organization, the American Volkssport Association, has clubs in every state. We are working with the Mid-Nebraska Trail-Seekers in offering the first volkswalk on Prairie Plains land.

I’m just thinking how wonderfully appropriate this all is.  Another way to celebrate the land and its people.  View the details in the “Events” section and plan to experience the beautiful spring aspect of Griffith prairie while hiking on the mowed trails.  It will be a great opportunity to see the barn as well!
