Time Flies When You're Sitting at Your Desk
This blogging gig is not easy! I’m more than a little embarrassed that it’s been almost a year since I last blogged. A YEAR! Part of my job description is website management. I have a desk job. I should have time for this.
It’s not that I haven’t had anything to write about in the last 11 months. Thinking back, I’m amazed at everything that has happened. It’s hard to know where to start, but here goes.

A Need to Share
There’s some stuff so great that you’ve got to share it with someone - a new flavor of ice cream, an entertaining reality show, a story about your high-school ex losing all his hair and living in a trailer with three ferrets. And on such occasions when you really want to share but turn around to find you’re all alone and out of cell range, it makes you sad.
Very sad.

Me and My Shadow
There’s someone gunning for my job. And not in an oh-I-wish-I-had-a-cool-job-like-yours way either. I think he wants to replace me. And I’m starting to get concerned.
He shows up at all of our events, usually offering to help. He volunteers for everything and is constantly turning on the charm around our board members. For example, this weekend he showed up at the volkswalk at Griffith Prairie, chatted up the guests and ran errands for the organizers. He finished walking the 5K just in time to join the group of volunteers that had gathered to build fence. Riding to the work site with our board president he stopped at my van to make sure the president picked up a document I promised to deliver to him that day (which I had since forgotten).

A Strong Connection
To share a little about myself, I’m not a scientist. I’m not a birder, I can’t identify many prairie plants and I don’t know squat about the new Farm Bill. What I am is the mother of two boys, I was raised in Nebraska and taught by my family that time spent on the land is time well spent.
I don’t recall ever having specific discussions with my grandparents or parents about appreciating the land. What I do remember are feelings of joy and pleasure and anticipation at the thought of spending a day on my grandparents’ farm. Sometimes we would roam the pasture looking for thistles. Sometimes we’d look for rusty treasure in the dirt path by Grandpa’s shop – the rain would always expose a lost bolt or washer that would inspire a story or memory that Grandpa was anxious to share. And sometimes we’d just play, free to run around and explore what seemed to be an endless stretch of farmyard, pasture and cropland.
